{wordless wednesday: better late than never}
a day of firsts
yesterday was a day of firsts.
first time eating peanut butter.
first ambulance ride.
first time in the ER.
first time vomiting.
first IV.
we are home now. thankfully, Carter is fine. he's on a steroid for a few days and an antihistamine and we are in possession of an epi-pen in the event this happens again. we've been warned that subsequent exposures are oftentimes much more intense. we go to dr. thole tomorrow to learn what's in store for us and what we need to do as parents to make sure he is safe. i imagine there will be allergy tests in our future to see if he has any other allergies. we are going to be a peanut-free house to keep things simple and safe.

what we remember:
...how quickly everything happened. 5 min after lunch i asked daddy if you looked okay. he didn't notice anything. 5 min after that daddy was calling 911.
...hearing the sirens at the back gate, knowing they were coming for you
...how LONG it took for EMS to get here--thank God your airway didn't close
...how you hated the pulse monitor on your toe and REALLY hated the IV!
...how swollen your face got and then how red your turned while in the ER
...daddy researching all the medicines you were on and then not being able to sleep because he was so worried about you

15 months
carter brian,
you are officially a toddler; you are our little boy, instead of our baby. we love you more and more each day and are so lucky to have you in our lives.
here's what you've been up to this month:
you...
...WALK! your record at the moment is 29 steps! you can turn a little and walk holding items in your hand! it makes mommy and daddy do double takes when you walk into the kitchen! you are SO TALL it seems!
...take one nap a day, but i'm still not sure that that's the best thing for you. it's certainly NOT the best thing for mommy! she's EXHAUSTED by the time you go down for nap at 1pm!
...open any and every closed door in the house! we may need to change the lever style doorknobs to round ones sooner rather than later!
...FINALLY stack blocks!
..."wash" your hair at bathtime
...are just starting to use a fork and spoon. you have a LONG road to mastery though, which means many messes in mommy's future!
...drink 16oz of (organic) whole (cow's) milk, 8oz of water and 2oz of (organic) apple juice each day, except for the last few days--you've had a very runny stool which caused your FIRST EVER diaper rash, so there's been no juice for you recently!
...are adjusting just fine to mommy's new mission of avoiding refined/processed ingredients in her cooking at home. but we DEFINITELY have (at least) a treat every few days--either at home or out of the house.
...wear size 5 diapers, more so because they are the size mommy bought a lot of, and less so for the proper fit.
...say "bird" if you hear or see a bird, or anything that sounds remotely close to bird. it's super cute!
...have added "meow" = cat, "bear" and "tv" to your list of words. but like most of your words, one must use context clues to know what you are talking about.
...are into puzzles, but still lack the fine motor skills necessary to manipulate the ones we have.
...still love dogs and books. lately you've been having a hard time saying the word "book". we think it's because you are trying to get the "ook" part right, so you stutter a little.
...are wearing mostly 12 month size clothes right now. some are baggier than others, but i got tired of seeing you in the same clothes all the time.
...get in "trouble" for playing with cords plugged into electrical outlets and for banging on the tv.
...haven't broken the 20lb mark yet, at least i don't think so. mommy stopped weighing you because it was making her sad. we will see what dr. thole says on monday at your 15 month appointment.
...LOVE playing in the dishwasher. you crawl/walk over to it at random times during the day and ask me to open it. mommy saves the dirty dishes until after you wake up from your nap so you can play in the dishwasher every day. mommy had to move the forks and knives up to the top shelf for your safety.
...are calling grandma H "nana" now. :)
...enjoy our weekly trips to the grocery store where your friend in the produce department always gives you a free balloon!
..."ah-ooo-gah!" EVERYTHING that has a nose!!
...have mastered "mama up" and "dada up"! you even say it if you want to switch whomever's holding you!
...dance and clap and know where your belly and toes are!
...say "bye"/"bye bye" ALL THE TIME...when daddy says "see ya", if we put on our shoes, if we change you out of your pajamas, if we say "ready" or "go"...it's really amazing at how many things can trigger you saying "bye bye" over and OVER and OVER again!
...are learning to blow kisses which is just TOO CUTE and are singing!!
...have a new friend named Michael that you see often. he's younger than you and much bigger than you. in truth, i think you are a bit scared of him, but it's good for you to be around other babies, plus, mommy thinks his mommy is funny.
...and...
...ride on our laps and when we sing the ponderosa theme song, you say "yee haw!" , which sounds a bit more like a high-pitched "eee!" but we'll keep working on it!

happy birthday to me!
although i posted some photos yesterday, i felt like i needed a whole post on my 26th birthday. yes! it was that good! :)
unfortunately, my uncle's funeral service was on my birthday, but we were still able to celebrate me and my life in spite of the circumstances. (we did not attend the services in the panhandle--it was too far of a drive to do midweek, but we did send positive thoughts to those there celebrating his life).
i opened my first gift on tuesday night (the night before my birthday). it was a gift certificate for sleeping in and breakfast in bed, so i started out the day rested and had a chance to get ready (AND DO MY HAIR!)
K dressed C in his "mommy's little hunk" onesie for my special day and took a picture of the special birthday message they made for me with blocks
{there weren't enough "a"s to write "happy birthday"}
egg with cheese muffin cups and chocolate chip muffins were on my breakfast in bed menu. K even made me my morning coffee and brought it to me! (no, he doesn't remember how i take my coffee, he had to ask.)
wrapped up in that pretty pink paper were two books: a cookbook i've been wanting ("deliciously organic") and a book on buying organic produce! exactly what i wanted!
after gifts and presents, becky came over midmorning and we spent most of the day together eating lunch, shopping and catching up.
i decided that since kenny and i couldn't go out just the two of us, we should go somewhere local with some history. we took carter to babe's pizza for the first time. we had a nice time, even though they messed up our pizza order. carter L.O.V.E.D. their garlic cheese bread--i mean, who doesn't?? i realize as i'm typing this that we never let him try any of the pizza. he was finished with dinner by the time the pizza was ready. oh well, there's always next time!
we got back home in time to give carter a quick bath and K and i had warm chocolate chip cookies in bed for dessert.
it was a great day! it felt so nice to feel special and loved! i need to start a petition to have a monthly birthday. a year is too long to be waited on and showered with love (and gifts!)! ;) oh! and the best gift of all...carter took 5-6 steps independently about a half a dozen times, so he's officially "walking"!!
